Walk Yourself Thin
Exercise for weight loss is as easy as stepping out of your front door. When you walk to burn calories, you do not have to learn a new activity, nor do you overstress your joints by running, jumping or dancing. The proven way to lose weight is to move more and eat less. Walking, even short distances, goes a long way toward helping you reach your body sculpting goals.
If you are new to exercise and are hesitant about walking outside, march in place or walk laps around your kitchen table. These small changes increase your daily step count, which burns calories and changes the shape of your body. Begin with 5 to 10 minutes of walking, once or twice a day. Gradually increase your duration, venture outside or onto a treadmill, and add a third daily session until you are walking for approximately 60 minutes each day. You can walk for an hour all at one time if your fitness level and schedule allow it, but your body receives equal benefits if you break your walking sessions into two or three groups.
Once you have improved your endurance, aim to walk between 10,000 and 15,000 steps per day. Here’s where a pedometer or fitness tracker are put to good use. Your smartphone may also have the capability to track your steps, but remember to keep it with you when walking. The American Heart Association recommends walking 10,000 steps a day. To lose weight, you may need to increase your daily step count to 15,000. Every step counts, even those from your car to a store, so park farther from the door. Step count can also be increased at work by walking to your co-workers desk instead of calling or e-mailing them.
To increase your walking challenge, add sprint intervals. Walk at a comfortable pace for 3 minutes and then walk as fast as possible for 1 minute; you can then repeat this pattern. Add hills once or twice a week for a greater intensity workout.
